- <p>DIED. JAMES LEO HERLIHY, 66, playwright, actor and author of
- the novels Midnight Cowboy and All Fall Down; reportedly from
- an overdose of sleeping pills; in Los Angeles. Writing with
- hard-edged realism, the Detroit native portrayed troubled adolescents
- and those on society's periphery. All Fall Down, published in
- 1960, was later made into a film starring Warren Beatty and
- Eva Marie Saint. In 1965 Herlihy wrote Midnight Cowboy, which
- was the basis for the classic film starring Dustin Hoffman and
- Jon Voight. Herlihy's play Blue Denim, also made into a movie,
- enjoyed a successful Broadway run in 1958.
